Tema: Creating a student-centred digital learning experience at the Open University

Sažetak: Moodle was adopted by the Open University (OU) in 2006 as a scalable solution to delivering our distance learning and teaching content. Since then we have invested heavily in developing core Moodle, becoming highly active community members. Moodle is now firmly embedded in our digital strategy, used for a number of different purposes across the institution. In this presentation we will describe how we design, develop and support our online student experience. We will give an overview of the OU’s learning systems and describe how we have applied a ‘discover, design, deliver’ model to transform our student journey and enhance the learning experience in Moodle. We use Moodle for our core module websites, and also for our informal open learning platform, offender learning delivery, OpenScience lab and many more. Moving towards a model of online delivery of learning, the information architecture and user experience underpinning our core learning systems has never been so crucial to the success of our students. In this talk, we’ll outline how we have responded to an increasingly competitive higher education marketplace, researching and identifying key design principles to deliver a cutting edge user-centred study experience.

LOUISE OLNEY, Head of Online Student Experience, The Open University, Velika Britanija

Bio: Louise Olney has been at the Open University since 2001. Her first role was to help deliver a new online presence for all courses at the OU using an in-house built content management system and this was achieved in 2005. She has worked with Moodle since it was adopted as a more scalable solution by the OU in 2006. Louise continues to push the importance of the student experience in being able to offer a competitive and engaging online learning experience and deliver rich, immersive digital content.


STEVE RYCROFT, Head of Learning and Teaching Environments, The Open University, Velika Britanija

Bio: Steve has a background in experimental physics, commercial publishing and software development, with 12 years’ experience of higher education content production and systems management at the OU. He is passionate about digital innovation, technology-enhanced learning and creating amazing user experiences. He loves making things, breaking things and fixing things.

Danute PranckuteDANUTE PRANCKUTE, Vytautas Magnus University, Litva


Bio: Danute works as Moodle administrator at Vytautas Magnus University from 2009. Her main responsibilities are extending university Moodle system by analyzing teacher needs, contributing in Moodle community by translating it into Lithuanian language, preparing Moodle user guides in Lithuanian language. During 8 years Danute organized more than 40 Moodle training for higher education, vocational and secondary school teachers, government institution employees.From 2012 she consults Lithuanian schools Moodle administrators, government institutions about learning management system integration and adaptation. Danute participated in staff training mobility in Zagreb, Deusto and Hellenic Open universities.


Marius SadauskasMARIUS SADAUSKASVytautas Magnus University, Litva

Bio: Marius works at Vytautas Magnus University, Innovative Studies Instutute as chief specialist from 2011. His main responsibilities are web servers, websites development and integration with learning management systems, university Moodle setup, administration and maintenance. He has worked in various Erasmus+ projects as researcher, training material developer. At university he also organizes training for teachers about Open Educational Resources and Creative Commons licensing, helps teacher to use OER’s properly with proper licenses. Marius constantly goes to various conferences and staff training mobility within Europe to acquire knowledge and share experience about Moodle strategies with other universities.
