The 15th edition of MoodleMoot Croatia, the official MoodleMoot event for Croatia, was held at the University of Zagreb University Computing Centre (SRCE) on 12 and 13 June 2025. Organised by SRCE, the event is listed among the globally recognised MoodleMoots and brings together professionals who use, administer or develop Moodle, as well as anyone interested in learning more about this leading open-source learning platform.
Over 80 participants from Croatia and the region engaged actively in workshops, discussions, and idea exchanges, creating a highly positive and motivating atmosphere throughout the two-day event.
The programme opened with an invited lecture titled “Why and How to Teach Students to Use ChatGPT” by Prof. Mirjana Pejić Bach, Ph.D. from the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb. She discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on private life, education, and business, highlighting both positive and negative aspects and sharing insights on how students can be guided to use AI tools responsibly.
In their session “Teach, Learn, Connect: A Constructivist’s Guide to Today’s Moodle,” Heather Robinson and Annie Sheffield from Moodle.org demonstrated how today's Moodle features can enhance student engagement, learning experience, and collaboration.
Participants were also introduced to several upcoming improvements that SRCE’s E-learning Centre is preparing for the Merlin e-learning platform for the next academic year. These include new functionalities such as shared question banks, a dark mode theme, and access to archived courses from multiple academic years. There were also presentations on how to use Moodle to support 3D printing in educational settings and on BDP (Balanced Design Planning), a tool that simplifies course design and enables seamless course import into Moodle.
The second day opened with an invited lecture titled “Personalised Formative Feedback through Generative AI in Higher Education” by Assoc. Prof. Lourdes Guàrdia, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Teaching at the Open University of Catalonia. She shared how their institution uses a custom AI assistant to provide students with personalised, high-quality feedback in various learning scenarios, regardless of study level.
Participants also had the opportunity to improve their prompt engineering skills for generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, explore the use of gamification in Moodle, and learn how to apply constructive alignment in practice using available Moodle tools to align learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessment methods.
For the past 15 years, SRCE has played a key role in bringing together the Croatian Moodle community. It operates Merlin, the largest and most modern e-learning platform in Croatia’s higher education system, based on Moodle. With its expertise in e-learning systems and digital education, SRCE’s E-learning Centre supports the implementation of digital technologies in teaching and provides training for teachers to develop their digital competencies.
Photos and video recordings of the event will be made available on the official MoodleMoot Croatia page.
