SRCE continues to bring together the community and provide the necessary infrastructure and support to enable 21st-century digital education for teachers and students by implementing the latest technologies.
(Zagreb, June 15, 2026) The MoodleMoot Croatia 2026 event was held on June 11 and 12 at SRCE, gathering more than 50 professionals working with the Moodle system as users, administrators, or developers, as well as those interested in learning more about it.
Moodle is a free open-source system that also powers Merlin, the largest and most modern e-learning system for higher education in Croatia, maintained by SRCE. This year’s MoodleMoot Croatia is an official MoodleMoot event for Croatia and is listed among registered MoodleMoot events worldwide.
“For 16 years, SRCE has been organizing this event with the aim of enabling the exchange of knowledge and experiences among users of the Merlin e-learning system and other Moodle-based platforms. This model of community gathering has proven extremely valuable in today’s era of information overload, numerous tools, and increasing challenges in selecting the right ones to achieve desired outcomes. Through collaboration and joint efforts, we can continue to push the boundaries in education for the benefit of both students and teachers,” emphasized Doc. dr. sc. Sandra Kučina Softić, Assistant Director of SRCE, in her welcome address.
The two-day event began with the invited lecture “Moodle Community Contributions – a new team's inception, early wins and plans for the future” by Michael Hawkins from Moodle HQ. He presented the goals and results of the newly established Community Contributors team on Moodle.org, which focuses on collaboration with developers and translators from the community.
Zvonko Martinović from SRCE then announced a new AI-powered contextual assistant in the Merlin e-learning system, which will support teachers and students in their e-courses starting in the fall. Assoc. Prof. dr. sc. Nina Pereza, Assistant Rector for Educational Innovation at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, delivered an invited lecture titled “Moodle at the Heart of Medical Education: Examples of Good Practice from the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka.”
Participants were also presented with the results of the first six months of the Erasmus+ STTAIRS project, in which SRCE is a partner. SRCE experts presented the technical selection and evaluation of artificial intelligence and digital well-being tools for implementation in Moodle. Selected tools were installed in the project’s virtual learning environment and tested by partner institutions.
On the first day, presentations covered the integration of e-courses in Merlin with SRCE’s Advanced Computing service, the application of the ABC method for instructional design, and examples of using artificial intelligence tools and Moodle to improve learning and teaching.
The second day started with the invited lecture “Turnitin: Building Academic Excellence in the Age of AI – Pivoting from academic integrity, focused on authorship, towards learning integrity” by Lluis Val Becerra, Regional Manager at Turnitin.
Further presentations included practical examples of Moodle activities such as Dialogue and Forum, creating STACK questions for automatic checking of symbolic and numerical expressions, building large question banks with the help of AI tools, and the use of Virtual Programming Lab (VPL) for student learning and continuous monitoring.
Through its expertise in e-learning systems and digital education, SRCE provides support in implementing digital technologies in the educational process and training teachers in digital competencies. By organizing this event, SRCE also contributes to the global Moodle community.
