(Zagreb, 8 September 2025) University Computing Centre (SRCE) celebrated 25 years of the Croatian Internet eXchange (CIX). The event was opened by Damir Habijan, Minister of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation, and Ivan Marić, Director of SRCE, and gathered representatives of CIX members, academia, industry and the media.

In his presentation “CIX – 25 Years of Free Connectivity”, Director Marić reflected on the origins, development and importance of CIX, emphasizing its role in supporting openness, decentralization and collaboration on the internet. “Recognizing CIX as critical infrastructure is not symbolic—it is a technical necessity,” he noted.

A panel discussion followed: “The Future of the Internet Begins Locally: The Role of CIX in Digital Sovereignty”, featuring representatives from government, industry, academia and regulators. The panelists agreed that cooperation between all sectors is essential for ensuring decentralization, security and sustainability of the internet. CIX, which SRCE has operated for 25 years, strengthens digital sovereignty and provides end users with a better internet experience.

The Croatian Internet eXchange (CIX), the national internet exchange point founded in 2000, enables direct interconnection between internet service providers in Croatia, reducing traffic through third-party networks and improving communication quality and security. SRCE designs, builds and maintains the distributed CIX infrastructure, now operating across three locations in two cities.

CIX has been a full member of the Euro-IX association since 2008. In May 2025, a third CIX site opened in the DC North data centre in Varaždin, further improving resilience and availability. Since April 2025, CIX has been aligned with MANRS recommendations, using IRR and RPKI validation to enhance routing security.

More than 1 EB of data has passed through CIX since its establishment, including 322.7 PB in 2024. CIX currently has 40 active members. More information is available on the CIX website.
