Moodle Community Contributions - a new team's inception, early wins and plans for the future

Michael Hawkins, Product Manager - Community Contributions, Moodle HQ

Biography: Mick joined Moodle HQ in 2018 as a Developer, but has led teams of LMS developers since February 2022. After 3.5 years in an Engineering Manager role responsible for key components of the underlying LMS platform, admin/dev experience, and integrations with external systems, Mick shifted focus in October 2025 to become the Product Manager of a brand new Community Contributions team. That team also develops Moodle LMS, but with a focus on working with contributors from the wider Moodle community, including ensuring community developers and translators have the tools and resources they need to succeed. Mick has also been responsible for managing incoming Moodle LMS security reports and their responsible disclosure for the last 7.5 years.

Summary:
In October 2025, a new Community Contributions team was launched in Moodle HQ's Products department, which focuses on working with community developers and translators on their important contributions to Moodle LMS, as well as ensuring they have everything they need to succeed. The team also delivers updates and improvements to areas highlighted as important by the wider community.

In this session, we will cover the goals and outcomes of the first 6 months of the Community Contributions team (including our impact on the recent LMS 5.2 release), some exciting new initiatives in the pipeline, and what this means for our community contributors.

Biography: Lluís Val, Regional Manager for EMEA at Turnitin, supporting educational and research institutions in achieving academic excellence through the use of learning technology. With over 15 years of experience in business development and account management in the technology sector, Lluís has worked closely with universities and educational institutions on digital transformation, academic integrity and assessment practices. Currently, focus is on how artificial intelligence is reshaping teaching, assessment, and learning integrity, supporting institutions in adopting innovative solutions that promote transparency, authorship, and the development of student skills.

Summary:
For more than 25 years, the key question in academic integrity has been: Has the student produced this work? The authorship of the final essay became the main way to assess whether learning had taken place. But today, the deeper question we must ask is: Has truly meaningful learning actually occurred?
